Gi Care and Hygiene Guidelines
1. Keep Your Gi Clean
● Wash your gi after every class. A dirty or sweaty gi can carry bacteria and cause infections. Always make sure to bring a clean gi to class.
2. Multiple Uniforms
● Consider owning multiple gis to ensure you always have a fresh, clean uniform for training. Rotating between two or more gis allows time for washing and drying, preventing any odors or bacteria buildup.
3. Use Proper Detergent
● Use a gentle, mild detergent when washing your gi to avoid damaging the fabric. Avoid using bleach as it can weaken the material over time. Adding a little white vinegar can help eliminate odors.
4. Air Dry Your Gi
● Hang your gi to dry instead of using a dryer, which can cause it to shrink or wear out faster. Make sure your gi is completely dry before storing it to avoid mildew or mold.
5. Trim Your Nails and Practice Good Hygiene
● Always trim your fingernails and toenails to prevent scratching your training partners. Shower before and after class, and make sure your body is clean and free of excessive odors.
6. No Jewelry or Accessories on the Mats
● Remove all jewelry, watches, and accessories before training to prevent injuries or damage to your gi.
7. Footwear Off the Mats
● Only wear clean, gym-approved footwear when walking off the mats. Bare feet or clean socks are required on the mats to maintain hygiene.
8. Keep Hair Neat and Secure
● If you have long hair, make sure it's tied back securely to avoid distractions during training. Ensure that your hair is clean and free from products that may transfer onto the mats.
Why Cleanliness Matters
Staying clean and hygienic is not just about your health, but also about respecting your training partners and the gym environment. Dirty uniforms and poor hygiene can lead to infections, skin conditions, and make training uncomfortable for others.
By following these guidelines, you'll ensure a pleasant and safe training environment for everyone at By Any Means Jiu-Jitsu.
Parent Rules: Be a Parent, Not a Coach
1. Support, Don’t Instruct:
○ Let the instructors do their job. Encouragement and support from parents are essential, but avoid giving technical advice or corrections from the sidelines.
2. Respect the Learning Process:
○ Jiu-jitsu is a journey that takes time. Avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your child to perform a certain way. Celebrate effort and progress, no matter how small.
3. Stay Positive:
○ Focus on positive reinforcement and praise, regardless of the outcome of a class or sparring session. Learning is about progress, not perfection.
4. No Interruptions During Class:
○ Refrain from calling out to your child or distracting them during training. Let them stay focused and engaged in the class with their peers and instructors.
5. Communicate with Instructors:
○ If you have concerns about your child’s progress, feel free to discuss them with the instructor privately. We’re here to work together to help your child succeed.
Kids’ Ruleset: Respect, Focus, and Discipline
1. Respect Your Teammates and Instructors:
○ Always show respect by listening carefully to instructions, being polite, and treating your teammates with kindness.
2. Focus on the Class:
○ Pay attention and follow the instructor’s directions. Jiu-jitsu requires focus, and distractions slow down your learning and that of your classmates.
3. Practice Self-Discipline:
○ Arrive on time, come prepared, and show responsibility for your own training. Work hard and stay committed to your goals.
4. No Roughhousing Off the Mats:
○ Jiu-jitsu techniques are only for the gym or competition. Do not use your skills outside of class unless it's for self-defense in a serious situation.
5. Take Care of Your Training Partners:
○ Train safely and always protect your partners. Remember, jiu-jitsu is about learning together, so avoid rough or reckless behavior.
6. Ask Questions When You’re Unsure:
○ It’s okay to not know everything! Raise your hand and ask the instructor if you don’t understand something.
7. Keep the Academy Clean:
○ Keep your uniform clean, help take care of the mats, and pick up after yourself.
